SA IMET Accreditation Standards

Overview

The SA IMET Accreditation Standards have been developed through an extensive nine month drafting and consultation process. The Standards were ratified by the SA IMET Health Advisory Council (HAC) in April 2010 and then endorsed by the Minister for Health (SA) and the Medical Board of Australia in June 2010.

About the Standards

This version of the SA IMET Accreditation Standards reflects the establishment of SA IMET and its responsibility, in partnership with hospitals and Colleges, to support all postgraduate medical education and training in South Australia.

This now includes accreditation of PGY2+ years and will, from 2011, also include accreditation of generic aspects of Vocational training.

Accreditation Process

The accreditation process sets out to establish and monitor standards for trainee medical officers and to assist in the attainment of a universally high standard of general training.

Through the accreditation process, training facilities are evaluated by a survey team using clearly defined and established standards. Accreditation is essential in ensuring that the optimal environment exits for the supervision and training of postgraduate trainees in South Australia.

SA IMET uses a supportive accreditation process with recognises that high standards will be more easily achieved if hospitals can interact with SA IMET to articulate their support needs. Through this feedback, SA IMET can advocate for the supports needed to optimise education delivery.

Its reporting lines include the Minister for Health and the Chief Executive, SA Health.
