The SA IMET specifically assist 'Standard Pathway' IMGs gain employment by way of a centralised database and conduct workplace based assessment of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) on the 'Competent Authority Pathway'. SA IMET provide a clear directive to IMGs seeking employment in SA as outlined below:

Standard Pathway

As an IMG on the 'Standard pathway' to be considered for employment in South Australia you must be registered on the AMC/JMO database. Candidates on the database will be considered for vacant junior medical officer positions within the SA teaching hospitals. Registration on the AMC/JMO database does not guarantee employment but you must be on the database to be considered. Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for registration; passed the AMC MCQ exam, meet the English language requirements as determined by the Medical Board, residing in Australia and have practiced medicine within the last three years.

In October of each year IMGs from the database are selected to participate in the 'Ready for Work' program. The Ready for Work program aims to provide IMGs who are being considered for employment in the following year, but have no Australian clinical experience, the opportunity to gain knowledge of the Australian Health Care System and the role of the JMO.

Competent Authority Pathway

IMGs eligible for the 'Competent Authority pathway' must be employed in order to commence Workplace Based Assessment and fulfil the requirements of this pathway. IMGs who fit within this group are encouraged to make direct contact with the SA training hospitals and negotiate a position.

Specialist Pathway

IMGs eligible for the 'Specialist pathway' are encouraged to make direct contact with the SA training hospitals and negotiate a position this is done alongside liaison with the relevant College.
