English language skills test

If you completed high school in a non-English speaking country, it is a requirement of registration as a health professional in Australia to gain a pass in an AHPRA approved English language skills test. Please note foundation year programs or equivalent in an exempt country do not constitute high school completion.

Two of the approved tests are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Occupational English Test (OET). A grade of at least a B pass in all four sections of the OET or a score of at least an academic level 7 in all four sections of the IELTS is required.

The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) is based at Flinders University and offers regular OET preparation classes throughout the year. These classes deal specifically with the four different areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as pronunciation. Many health professional students who have completed the IELI OET preparation classes have had success in gaining registration and are now working in SA hospitals. The Medical Board of Australia has created a standard detailing the requirements for international students who did not complete their secondary education in English, please see English language skills registration standard for more information. If you are unsure if you need to complete an English language skills test contact the Medical Board of Australia for clarification.
