Southern Adelaide Local Health Network

Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) comprises Flinders Medical Centre (FMC), Noarlunga Health Service (NHS), Repatriation Hospital (RGH), and has strong partnerships with Flinders University and General Practice Network South.

SALHN provides care for around 341,000 people living in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide as well as providing a number of state-wide services, and services to those in regional areas.

Medical Trainees employed by SALHN are offered rotations at all 3 sites and as such have an enviable selection of rotations and locations.

Flinders Medical Centre

Flinders Medical Centre is a 566 bed public teaching hospital, co-located with the Flinders University School of Medicine and the 130 bed Flinders Private Hospital.

80% of overnight admissions at FMC are emergency admissions. The hospital is a major trauma centre providing an around the clock emergency retrieval service to bring patients to hospital by road or helicopter. FMC provides the range of medical services that are usually associated with a major tertiary centre including a trauma/retrieval service, level three neonatal nursery and transplant service.

Location

Noarlunga Health Service

Noarlunga Health Service is located in the outer southern metropolitan area, in close proximity to southern beaches, rolling hills, the renowned Southern Vales wine region and the pleasant Fleurieu Peninsula. The catchment population is 170,000, of which a significant proportion is children and youth.

The hospital is a 102 bed public and private hospital with medical, surgical and mental health wards. The Emergency Department is busy, with 40,000 attendances per annum, 30% being under the age of 16. Noarlunga Health Service also consists of a regional Community Health Service and Mental Health Service.

Accreditation for training has been granted by the RACGP and ACRRM. The training offered has proven to be very suitable for those interested in rural general practice, but is also applicable for metropolitan practice. Medical staff can expect to see a broad spectrum of common diseases and develop practical skills. Supervision and teaching is from an emergency physician, general physicians, cardiologist, psychiatrists and numerous experienced general practitioners.

Rotations are available in general and emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry.

NHS is an accredited general practice training site.

Repatriation General Hospital

The Repatriation General Hospital is an accredited 260-bed acute teaching hospital with close clinical and training links to Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University. The focus is on providing the best care for veterans and the older community of Southern Adelaide. The facilities are single story on a large site with pleasant surroundings in the southern metropolitan region of Adelaide.
