Training programs available in South Australian teaching hospitals include:
Pre-specialist Training programs that focus on specific medical and surgical specialty areas. These positions will provide you with experience in specific clinical specialties and are suitable if you know the specialty career path you wish to follow. In some cases you will need to be accepted by the relevant specialty college prior to appointment and some specialty appointments are made soley by the relevant college organisations, information regarding appointment processes and deadlines can be obtained from the individual colleges.
General (Non-Specialist) Training programs that provide further hospital experience. These positions will provide you with general rotations through medical, surgical and emergency units and are suitable if you have are not yet decided on a specialist or general practice training programme or wish to obtain more experience. Do not confuse “General Training” with like-sounding “General Practice Training”.

Flinders Medical Centre [FMC]
3-100 General Training. This program includes rotations in Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, General Medicine, Rehabilitation, General Surgery, Intensive Care, Paediatrics and Community terms including PGPPP placements with Drug and Alcohol Services SA (DASSA), Northern Territory, and Aldinga GP Practice. Six month rotations in Obstetrics and Gynaecology are available for applicants who have been accepted into the Diploma of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DRANZCOG). 39 positions were available in 2012 through SA IMET's process.
3-200 General Practice Training. Applicants must be accepted into the Australian GP Training Program to enter this stream.
The program includes a 3 month Paediatrics rotation. Other potential rotations include Anaesthetics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, General Medicine, General Surgery, Intensive care, Rehabilitation, Neuro- rehabilitation and access to all other General training rotations except Community terms. Six month rotations in O&G are possible to fulfil the requirements for the Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. GP training includes Simulation sessions and weekly tutorials conducted by the Director of GP Training. Up to seven positions may be available in 2014 through SA IMET's process. 10 positions were available in 2012 through SA IET's process
3-300 Basic Physician Training – Adult Medicine. Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) offers Basic Physician Trainees (BPT) high quality clinical training and educational experience through rotations across its network (Flinders Medical Centre (FMC), Repatriation General Hospital (RGH) and Noarlunga Health Service (NHS)). It offers a comprehensive training program that is integrated with the clinical service requirements of the hospital and aimed at providing optimal preparation for the Fellowship examination of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
The Director of Physician Training (DPT) works with trainees to ensure specific college requirements are met. We have the commitment from senior staff to support trainees and there is a structured teaching program for the written and clinical RACP examinations. Rotations are tailored around exam / course times so candidates can maximise opportunities and preparation time, which has led to high levels of achievement for our candidates.
We offer our trainees a broad range of experience in internal medicine with rotations in the following specialities: Acute Medical Unit; Acute Care of the Elderly; Cardiology; Dermatology; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology, including liver transplantation; General Medicine; Haematology; Infectious Diseases; Medical Oncology; Neurology; Palliative Care; Renal; Respiratory; Rheumatology and Stroke
Entry into the program is competitive and what we look for is a trainee who can demonstrate a desire to train at SALHN, has a good academic and clinical history, and is an effective team player and communicator.

3-400 Surgical RMO. Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) offers Surgical RMO positions which provides high quality clinical training and educational experience through rotations across its network Flinders Medical Centre, Repatriation General Hospital and Noarlunga Health Services. This program is suitable for trainees who are intending to work towards entry into the Surgical Education & Training program (SET) with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). These positions are designed to offer the clinical rotations required to meet mandatory requirements for SET entry.
We offer a range of sub-specialty surgical rotations to our surgical RMOs, which include: Colorectal, HepatoPancreatoBiliary, Oesophago-Gastric, Cardio-Thoracic, ENT, Urology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Plastics and Reconstructive, Vascular. SET trainee positions available at FMC in Cardiothoracic Surgery, General, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic, ENT, Plastic and Reconstructive, Urology and Vascular Surgery. 11 positions were available in 2012 through SA IMET's process.

- Surgical RMO programs are available to trainees for a maximum of two years. Trainees who have completed two years in the Surgical RMO program are not eligible to apply for further surgical RMO training through this process. This policy is global.
- Surgical RMO positions will be recruited using a state-wide approach. If you wish to be considered for a Surgical RMO position you must apply to the individual hospital surgical training code/s. Interviews (if offered) will be held at a randomly allocated hospital and will consist of standardised questions across all sites to create a state-wide list of ranked candidates. 3-500 DRANZCOG Advanced. This is a 12 month program available to post-graduate Year 2 (PGY2) or above who have been accepted into the Advanced Diploma of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DRANZCOG). 3-600 Emergency Medicine. This program is suitable for trainee medical officers, who are PGY 3 or above and are applying for a full 12 months within the Emergency Departments at FMC and NHS. A minimum of 3 months will be spent at NHS. Registration with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for Emergency Medicine training is not a mandatory requirement. 8 positions were available in 2012 through SA IMET's process.

Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH)
5-100 General Training. 5-200 General Practice Training. Applicants must be enrolled in the college to be eligible to apply. This program includes rotations in Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, General Medicine, Acute Medical Services, Anaesthetics, ICU, Cardiology, GP, Radiology, General Surgery (including Upper GI/Breast/End/). The Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) offers Basic Physician Trainees (BPT) high quality clinical training and educational experience through rotations across its network (Lyell McEwin Health Service (LMHS) and Modbury Hospital). It has a burgeoning training program that is integrated with the clinical service requirements of the hospital and aimed at providing ideal preparation for the Fellowship examination of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
We offer our trainees a broad range of experience in internal medicine with rotations in the following specialities: General Medicine, Acute medical unit, Cardiology, Endocrinology; Gastroenterology, Medical Oncology; Neurology and stroke, Palliative care, Respiratory, Geriatric Medicine, Intensive Care, and Perioperative/Safety & Quality.
LMH is accredited as a level 2 training site by the RACP, and Modbury as level 1. There are also a limited number of rotations each year available on exchange to level 3 sites. Thus at present we are able to provide a pathway for two years of Basic Physician Training.
Entry into the program is competitive and what we look for is an employee who can demonstrate a desire to train at NALHN, has a good academic and clinical history, and is an effective team player and communicator. The Paediatric term offers a broad exposure to Paediatrics, incorporating inpatient and outpatients. A significant part of the work centres on neonatal patients in labour ward, postnatal ward and Special Care Nursery. This would be an ideal term for those wishing to pursue General Practice or starting a career in Paediatrics. The Paediatric Department is staffed by 7 Consultants, 7 Registrars and 6 RMO’s. 5-560 Paediatrics (12 months) Lyell McEwin Hospital is one of Adelaide’s leading tertiary hospitals. We are seeking to appoint Resident Medical Officers for a period of 12 months. The successful applicants will participate in clinical duties and be responsible for managing the care of patients allocated to the Department of Paediatrics in consultation with the Registrars, Consultants, Nurses and Allied Health professionals. Applicants interested in the Diploma in Child Health (DCH) are encouraged to apply. The Department has a team of 7 Consultants, 7 Registrars and 6 RMO’s. 2 positions were available in 2012 through SA MET's process
5-600 Emergency Medicine Training. Lyell McEwin is an urban district hospital with a busy Emergency Department, RMOs will gain an exposure to a wide range of both adult and paediatric presentations. RMOs have weekly two hour protected teaching sessions and ready access to emergency registrars and consultants 7 days a week. Good resources are available for those specialising or looking to specialise in Emergency Medicine.
This program is suitable for RMO’s applying for a full 12 months of emergency medicine experience, some time may be spent in the Modbury hospital ED. Registration with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for Emergency Medicine training is not a mandatory requirement but will be taken into consideration. Trainees already enrolled with the ACEM are advised to apply to the Director of Emergency Medicine directly. 6-450 General Surgery Service Post. This program is suitable for trainees who are intending to register with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and who are working towards entry into the Surgical Education & Training program (SET). The program is primarily general surgery orientated. There is rotation through the units during the year. The responsibilities may include working with the visiting Urologist and Plastic surgeon as well. There are commitments to elective and emergency surgery including outpatients, ward work and theatre. 1 position was available in 2012 through SA MET's process
6-460 ENT Surgery Service Post. This is a 12 month program designed for a surgical trainee who has strong interest in pursuing in the career of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. The service registrar will work under supervision from the consultants and ORLHNS SET trainee. The service registrar is responsible for inpatients care (including ward rounds, administrative work, consults), outpatient clinics, on calls, medical students teaching, organization of temporal bone courses and research. There are very good opportunities for the service registrars to be exposed to a wide range of ORLHNS surgical procedures including general ENT procedures, otology, facial plastics, rhinology, and some head & neck procedures. Mt Gambier & Districts Health Service (MGDHS)

10-110 DRANZCOG. This is a 12 month part-time position which can be undertaken as part of a 12 month General Practice training year. 10-160 Advanced Rural Skills Anaesthetics. This is a 12 month position available to Post-graduate Year 3 and above (PGY3+). 1 position was available in 2012 through SA MET's process
10-250 General Practice Training – with Paediatrics. This position includes rotations in Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics and General Medicine with other terms available on negotiated terms. 10-600 Emergency Medicine ACRRM Advanced Specialised Training. As part of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine's (ACRRM) Advanced Specialised Training, which aims to broaden the trainees’ skills and capacity beyond the standard scope of GP training, MGDHS offers a 12 month ED placement which has been accredited by ACRRM for this purpose. This post aims to expand your knowledge and skills in Emergency Medicine through being based and supervised in a busy regional ED. Applicants must be in their third or subsequent post-graduate year (PGY3+) in order to be accepted into training. 2 positions were available in 2012 through SA MET's process
Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH)
1-100 General Training. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH)
2-100 General Training. This program may include rotations in Anaesthetics, Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, ICU, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Radiology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Paediatrics (by rotation to WCH and Modbury), Gynaecology and Community placements such Beulah Park, Wirreanda (Morphett Vale), Kapunda and Angaston General Practices or Port Lincoln Aboriginal Health Service. GP Trainees are given priority for Paediatrics, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Geriatric Medicine and Gynaecology and Community rotations. Applicants must have also applied to the Australian General Practice Training Program to be eligible for these positions. 29 positions were available in 2012 through SA MET's process
2-200 General Practice Training.
This program includes rotations in Anaesthetics, Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, ICU, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Radiology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Paediatrics (by rotation to WCH and Modbury), Gynaecology and Community placements. GP Trainees are given priority for Paediatrics, Palliative Care, Geriatric Medicine and Gynaecology and Community rotations. Applicants must be enrolled in the college to be eligible to apply.
TQEH is excited to announce a new hospital based rotation for GP registrars in the rural pathway. It is aimed at the PGY2-3 level doctor who have been accepted into the rural pathway of a GP training provider program and will offer 4 x 3 month rotations. The focus will be on learning skills for managing the airway of the unconscious patient, advanced life support skills and developing a basic understanding of anaesthetic agents, and muscle relaxant drugs. The rotation will be an ACCRM accredited term based at TQEH. It is NOT intended to enable a doctor to be competent at giving anaesthetics, but supports the development of critical basic skills needed in rural and remote general practice. 3 positions were available in 2012 through SA MET's process
2-300 Basic Physician Training. The Basic Physician Training program at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides the post-graduate pre-examination training for doctors aspiring to be physicians under the auspices of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP). Basic training consists of three years in hospital training in the subspecialties of medicine with educational support and preparation for the RACP written and clinical examinations. 10 positions were available in 2012 through SA MET's process
2-400 Surgical RMO. This program is suitable for trainees who are intending to register with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and who are working towards entry into the Surgical Education & Training program (SET). 2-600 Emergency Medicine Training. This program consists of two years basic training (Intern year + 1 RMO year), followed by one year of Provisional Training (PGY3) and then four years of advanced training (PGY4-7). The primary examination must be completed before advanced training can be commenced. Advanced training includes 30 months of Emergency Department training and 18 months in related fields, such as ICU, anaesthesia, medicine, surgery or psychiatry. The Fellowship Examination must be completed before the final year of Advanced Training can be commenced. More detailed information is available from the ACEM website: http://www.acem.org.au
The provisional training program is suitable for trainees who are PGY 3 or above and may consist of 12 months in the ED or a combination of 6 months of ED and 6 months of non-ED training. The training program includes on site clinical tutorials, teaching ward rounds and bedside teaching. The Primary Examination Teaching Program is conducted on a rotational basis at TQEH, RAH and LMH. The Fellowship Candidate Teaching Program similarly is conducted on a rotational basis at TQEH, RAH and LMH.

Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH)
4-100 General Training. These positions are suitable for GP Trainees or TMO’s looking to gain prevocational experience in the following rotations; Obstetrics & Gynaecology (see Term Description), General Paediatrics, Paediatric Emergency (see Term Description), Paediatric Surgery (see example of a Surgical Rotation Term Description) and Northern Territory Aboriginal Health. Please indicate your particular preferences for rotations in your covering letter. 4-500 Obstetrics & Gynaecology. These positions are suitable for candidates preparing to apply for RANZCOG integrated training program selection, or for those preparing for a career in General Practice Obstetrics. Rotations of 6 or 12 months are negotiable. Please see Term Description for more details. Applicants to this program are eligible to enrol in the Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. This Diploma requires a minimum of 6 months obstetrics experience. 10 positions were available in 2012 through SA MET's process
Networks
7-700 Mental Health Services. These positions are suitable for RMO’s looking to gain prevocational experience in Psychiatry, and for GP and other speciality trainees who would like to gain an increased exposure to psychiatry training.
Positions are available for 12 months in both community and Inpatient settings throughout metropolitan Adelaide. Weekly education sessions are held at Glenside Hospital.
Psychiatry RMO positions are recruited and rotated using a statewide network approach.

9-800 Paediatric Basic Training.
This program is the entry level for paediatric training or those basic trainees moving to South Australia. The program includes rotations in General Paediatrics, Emergency, Surgery, Neonates and Relieving. Applicants are encouraged to enrol in the Diploma in Child Health (DCH). A minimum of six months Paediatrics experience is recommended for the DCH.
This training program is run as a state-wide network program where applications are considered by network supervisors who represent each of the hospitals that offer paediatric training. If you are successful in gaining a position the network panel will negotiate the site allocation with you.
