Royal Adelaide Hospital

Founded in 1840, Royal Adelaide Hospital is a 650-bed tertiary referral centre and teaching hospital of the Universities of Adelaide and South Australia, and in addition, includes the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre at Northfield. The hospital admits adult emergency and elective patients into a wide range of specialist units and offers a major trauma service.

RAH is part of the Central Northern Adelaide Health Service which includes 3 other major acute hospitals (Lyell McEwin, The Queen Elizabeth and Modbury Hospitals), along with Hampstead and St Margaret's Rehabilitation Hospitals and a significant number of mental health and primary health care services. The region also delivers all of Sth Australia's public pathology services, two major state-wide health services (BreastScreen SA and the SA Dental Service) and the State's medical retrieval service MedSTAR.

Royal Adelaide Hospital is located within the central business district adjacent to the Botanic Gardens and the Eastern Parklands. The Universities of Adelaide and South Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Museum and the Adelaide Zoo are within easy walking distance. Nearby Rundle Street is a popular café and shopping strip and is the home of our world renowned Fringe Festive.

The Hospital community includes an active RMO Society, which operates a bar on Friday evenings, as well as organising a range of entertainment and social events. The Medical Officer's lounge and facilities have been recently renovated and include:

  1. PC stations with intranet and internet access
  2. Kitchenette
  3. Lockers
  4. Television and lounge area
  5. Bedrooms
    A gymnasium is available on campus for RAH staff.

Royal Adelaide Hospital is a busy hospital which affords a wide variety of interesting work. RAH is strongly committed to supporting junior staff and their training needs. The Director of Clinical Training is responsible for supervising the training of interns at RAH. The Director of Clinical Training, the Medical Education Officers and the Director of Medical Services comprise a team which supports intern's professional development, careers counselling, continuing education and personal welfare.

The Intern Training Program at RAH is offered in a supported adult-based learning style and comprises:

  1. Weekly lunchtime tutorials based on intern's learning needs. (interns are released from normal duties to attend these tutorials)
  2. Opportunity to attend a rich variety of Departmental Meetings and Grand Rounds held regularly within the hospital
  3. Supervised experiential training
  4. Simulation laboratory training
  5. Directly-supervised procedural skills training in areas such as suturing, plastering, lumbar puncture, nasal packing, insertion of chest drains and use of the slit lamp.

Interns are encouraged to give feedback and participate in the shaping of their learning experiences throughout the year.

An orientation program across 5 days precedes the Intern year. Attendance is compulsory. The dates for 2011 are 5th to 11th January.
